Winter in Spiti valley is not just a trip; it’s an adventure. Extreme temperatures, unpredictable weather, and high-altitude challenges make proper preparation absolutely necessary. Here are top 7 must-know tips before you visit Spiti Valley:
Pack the Right Winter Gear – Do NOT Compromise!
Spiti Valley in winter is not like regular cold weather—it’s harsh, dry, and freezing. Wearing the wrong clothes can ruin your trip.
Layering is Key:
- Base Layer (Thermal Wear): Keeps body heat in.
- Mid Layer (Fleece or Wool): Provides insulation.
- Outer Layer (Down Jacket & Waterproof Shell): Protects against wind and snow.
Other Essentials:
- Waterproof, Insulated Boots (Walking on snow is unavoidable!)
- Woolen Gloves, Balaclava, Beanie, Woolen Socks
- UV Protection Sunglasses (Sunlight on snow can be blinding)
- Lip Balm & Moisturizer (The cold air is extremely dry)
Best Place to Buy? Decathlon (Highly recommended for quality technical gear)

Choose the Right Vehicle – 4×4 is a Must!
DO NOT travel in a tempo traveler in winter. We saw them struggling, breaking down, and failing to climb steep snowy roads.
Best Options:
- 4×4 Premium Campers (Like Isuzu, Hilux, or Thar) – Reliable, safe, and perfect for snowy roads.
- Self-Drive or With a Marshal? If you have no experience driving in snow, go with an experienced driver or convoy marshal.
Avoid: Tempo travelers, sedans, or low-ground-clearance vehicles.
Prepare for High Altitude & Low Oxygen
Spiti Valley is at 12,000+ feet altitude, meaning oxygen levels are low, and altitude sickness (AMS – Acute Mountain Sickness) is common.
How to Avoid AMS:
- Start taking Diamox (if needed) 1 day before the trip. Consult a doctor first.
- Drink 4-5 liters of water daily to stay hydrated.
- Move slowly when trekking at high-altitude spots (Langza, Komic, etc.).
- If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or have a headache, inform your guide immediately.
Keep Yourself Hydrated & Energized
In cold weather, people often forget to drink water, leading to dehydration and AMS.
What to Carry?
- Thermal Flask: To keep water from freezing.
- ORS/Electrolyte Sachets: Helps with dehydration.
- Dry Fruits, Energy Bars, Chocolates: Instant energy for treks.
Expect Limited Connectivity & ATM Issues
Network Availability:
- Jio & BSNL work best in Spiti Valley. Airtel & Vi have almost no coverage.
- Kaza has WiFi, but don’t expect high-speed internet.
Cash is King!
- Carry at least ₹5,000-₹10,000 in cash. ATMs often don’t work due to network or power issues.
Food & Bathroom Facilities – Be Prepared!
Food:
- Breakfast & Dinner are covered in most packages.
- Lunch is on you, so carry snacks or eat at local dhabas.
- Try local Spitian dishes like Thukpa, Butter Tea, and Momos.
Washrooms:
- In remote areas, many places have dry toilets (compost-based).
- Taps freeze in extreme cold, so don’t expect running water everywhere.
- Carry Wet Wipes & Tissues – Super useful for freshening up.
Be Flexible – Weather Can Change Plans
Spiti Valley in winter is unpredictable. Roads can close due to snowfall, and plans may change.
Have a buffer day or two in your schedule.
Stay updated on road conditions before heading to high-altitude spots.
